Reason for Dating
A friend of mine posted this as his status on Facebook. I had to repost it because it is so profound.: Although I’ve never dated, I can see now what God would want of two people in a dating relationship. For a Christian, dating shouldn’t be a time to merely spend with someone of the opposite sex (and especially shouldn’t include fornication, lust, etc). It should be to get to know a person to see if you two could spend the rest of your lives together serving Jesus, and it should be handled in all purity and maturity, for the purpose of encouraging that person in Christ. I emphasize more than just “getting to know each other to see if you could spend the rest of your lives together” because without Jesus then not only will the goal be wrong, but the means will go wrong. I’ve seen and heard about people becoming emotional wrecks because they got to know someone very well (and perhaps spent years dating them) and then couldn’t handle the breakup. Even if no fornication was committed, the effect of the relationship was still damaging. Although this may sound rather corny and idealistic, what if a guy asked a girl out with the following words:
“Hey, you’re a good friend, and I was wondering if you would like to go out with me so that we see if we might be able to spend the rest of our lives together serving Jesus. If we do this, we can be completely honest about all of our fears, hopes, worries, goals, and not focus on the vanity that the world does. And if we do go out, hold me accountable to treat you in such a way that you would say the following if we ever did break up: ‘Friend, although we aren’t good matches for spouses, I thank you that you kept the focus on Christ and didn’t take advantage of me. Instead, you kept me pure, knowing that God might have another man prepared for me to be my husband. You always treated me as if this future husband were watching, keeping me pure and not doing anything that is reserved for him. Thank you for your love for me and your faithfulness to Jesus.’”
If breaking up leads you to being an emotional wreck, then doesn’t it show that you never had the previous goal and mindset in your relationship? Yes, the words may be corny and unromantic, but isn’t Jesus deserving of higher honor than romance? If our lives are to be lives of worship to God, then shouldn’t our romance life be a life of worship to Him?
